This study is carried out to investigate the availability, use and effect of computer software in secondary school mathematics in Oyo State, Nigeria. One hundred students were randomly selected and twenty teahers were also chosen from the selected schools for this study. This study reveals that use of computer software will enhance the performance of the students in mathematics and also shows that students that are exposed to the use of computer software will perform significantly better than those exposed to the conventional method of teaching. The majority of teachers surveyed have access to computers at home that they use in relation to their teaching of mathematics. Some students are keen to use computer software in learning mathematics but for the fact that some schools have no computer laboratories let alone having adequate computer systems. This study recommend that teachers should introduce strategies for motivating students to learn and this can be best done by using computer...

This book discusses teachers’ interaction styles and their influence on secondary school students’ attitude and achievement in mathematics. It discusses how interaction styles, the school support structure, family, and students’ attitude towards school affect the attitudes towards mathematics. Drawing from Bauerfeld's interactive theory of learning, the author: establishes the type of teacher interaction styles used in teaching mathematics in secondary schools; discusses the effects of employing direct and indirect teacher interaction styles; and determines the role of gender and students’ attitudes towards mathematics and teachers in relation to performance. She posits that although both direct and indirect teacher interaction styles are used in teaching mathematics in secondary schools, indirect interaction styles result in; greater student achievement, positive attitude towards the subject and the teacher. She recommends that indirect interaction styles should be employed in the...

Studies have shown that the use of computer technologies enhance the learning of students. The integration of ICT is seen as a priority by governments and schools both in Australia and overseas but despite the resultant provision of infrastructure and professional development, little appears to be happening in secondary school classrooms. Mathematics education in public secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia and around the world has been experiencing a wave of reforms directed toward the integration of technology in mathematics courses. This book modeled mathematics teachers’ use and non use of technology in teaching using variables such as: beliefs of mathematics teachers about teaching and learning of mathematics with or without technology, barriers to computer use and professional development undertaken by teachers with technology. It also contains a comprehensive discussion of learning theories that are useful in teaching mathematics with technology. The prospective and...

Ray has a genuine interest in the growth and welfare of the young people of the schools he has served in, especially in the area of Mathematics. He takes delight in seeing the mathematical light bulb turn on in the minds of his students. Ray has seen many different approaches to teaching Mathematics in his teaching career. It was after a short period of tutoring tertiary students at Avondale College, New South Wales, that Ray developed a greater interest in how best to enable students to develop competent numeracy skills. He decided to undertake a Master of Education (Honours) program and to devote his thesis to examining one system of teaching Mathematics that was popular in...

Many students at secondary schools in Kenya have not been performing well in Mathematics. This has forced the Government of Kenya to among other things try to increase the salaries of the teachers, organize In-service Education and Training (INSET) for the trained teachers. However, the situation has not improved much. This research looked at an approach to teaching and learning of mathematics where the learners are fully involved in the learning process. Results showed that the approach improved students confident and the experimental group performed well in problems that required High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This shows that curriculum developers and teachers should read the text with a view to implementing the findings in the schools.

classroom teaching of grammar in secondary schools has over the years been a challenge to most language teachers partly because most books present the teaching of grammar in terms of rules that the learner is expected to memorize and reproduce in communication. This approach fails to provide the learner with contexts in which grammatical items should be used. This book therefore recommends the use of oral literature in the teaching of grammar. In doing this, it presents teachers conceptualization of the use of oral literature in the teaching of grammar. It also answers the question whether teachers employ oral literature genres in the teaching of grammar. Strategies exploited by teachers in grammar teaching are also looked into as well as challenges that teachers encounter in the use of oral literature in the teaching of grammar.Curriculum developers and teachers of English language would definitely find this book invaluable.

Mathematical manipulative materials (manipulatives) invite students to explore and represent abstract mathematical concepts in varied, concrete, tactile, and visually rich ways. Considering the prominence of the use of mathematical manipulatives in current K-12 curricula, pedagogical resources and professional development, research studies show that few secondary school teachers use them. While these studies do not examine this issue from the teachers? perspective, they posit that some teachers lack the mathematical knowledge connected to manipulatives, are uncomfortable with or uncertain how to use them, or do not believe that manipulatives have value in the teaching of secondary school mathematics. As a result there is a great need for research that provides further detail as to why and how secondary school mathematics teachers use manipulatives in their classrooms. This study, guided by the research questions: „How do secondary school teachers view the use of manipulatives in...

The teacher has to play his role in a suitable manner. He has to plan his teaching work based on his year plan, unit plan and lesson plans organize it by selecting suitable methods and appropriate aids carry on the teaching as planned and evaluate the learning out comes after teaching. He has to diagnose the students difficulties and provide for remedial teaching. He should complete the syllabus intime and revise it. He should give regular homework and correct it. Student participation in teaching-learning process is to be ensured. There is a need for the adoption of co-operative methods. Special attention is to be provided towards under achievers, and organize supervised study. It would be better to correct the answer scripts before them, only as it helps the students to know their deficiencies. All these measures influence the achievement of students. If the teacher performs these activities, it results in better student achievement, specially at the secondary school stage. There is...

The study discusses the teaching of English language writing skills in Hungarian secondary education. The aim of the dissertation is to contribute to the body of research on writing in an EFL (English as a foreign language) context on secondary school level in Hungary, and thus fill a hiatus in the area of writing research. The research wishes to test the research hypothesis, namely that secondary graduates do not possess effective writing skills in English. The main research question is: Why are English writing skills not taught adequately at Hungarian schools? Through the process of investigating the issue, various research tools have been applied: curriculum documents are analysed, English teachers in a cross section of Hungarian secondary schools are interviewed, students are asked through questionnaires and student papers are analysed. The research takes a largely qualitative approach, combined with some quantitative features. It focuses on a sample of three secondary schools,...

The issue confronting the education system is how to transform the curriculum and teaching-learning process to meet the increasing pressure to use the new ICT to teach students in the 21st century. This study, therefore, explored the challenges facing ICT integration in the teaching and learning of mathematics and sciences in secondary schools in Vihiga District. The diffusion of innovations theory (Rogers, 1995) served as a theoretical framework. The study employed the descriptive research design. Questionnaires were administered among 15 secondary school head teachers, 110 teachers and 335 students of fifteen schools and interviews were done on 15 teachers using an interview schedule. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 15 schools, which have been teaching computer studies. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and nferential statistics. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 15 (SPSS) was used. The study revealed that the extent of computer use among...
